South African Olympic and Paralympic track star Oscar Pistorius has been charged with murdering his girlfriend, model and budding reality TV star Reeva Steenkamp.
Pistorius, 26, was formally charged today at Pretoria Magistrate's Court with one count of murder after Steenkamp, 30, was found dead at his home in Pretoria early Thursday morning.
Afrikaans daily Beeld reports that Steenkamp, 30, was shot four times through a bathroom door in Pistorius's home. A neighbor heard the gunshots and called police around 3:30am. Steenkamp's body was found in the bathroom with bullet wounds in the head, chest, pelvis and hand.
Initial reports on Thursday suggested Pistorius may have mistaken Steenkamp for a home intruder, but Beeld reports that police and security guards had been called to the house two hours before the alleged shooting after neighbors heard Pistorius and Steenkamp yelling.
Prosecutors say they will argue that Pistorius committed premeditated murder. Pistorius's bail hearing has been postponed until Tuesday. He is currently being held at the Brooklyn Police Station in Pretoria.
Steenkamp, a law school graduate, men's magazine cover girl and activist, was to debut this weekend on reality TV show Tropika Island of Treasure 5.
