80 volunteers attempt refloating stranded whales at Farewell Spit
Beschreibung
More than 400 whales have stranded at the top of the South Island, with more than half already dead.
Around 80 volunteers were seen earlier today trying to re-float some of the whales at Farewell Spit near Golden Bay, but there are fears they may strand again. The area has been prone to whale strandings. Two years ago, nearly two hundred whales were also stranded here. Organisers say they should know later this afternoon whether the whales will restrand or not. Another rescue attempt is scheduled tomorrow as tonight's high tide might endanger volunteers.
