In the18h Home Gemmology webinar, supported by CIBJO - The World Jewellery Confederation, and co-hosted by Edward Johnson, the topic will be on sapphire, focusing on its early history with a very special guest, the renowned jewellery historian Dr Jack Ogden. Jack will will trace the story of sapphires in jewellery beginning with the earliest known examples, from about 300 BCE.. The sapphire-set jewellery illustrated will range across the Old World from Britain to China and down through history. Sources will be discussed and the limitations of early gem cutting which long impacted on what could be with this beautiful but hard stone considered.
His talk will be preceded by my very brief introduction on sapphire nomenclature as in the CIBJO standards, with a bit of history to introduce the fascinating talk ahead.
