A Rare Video from yesterday shows Tesla Project Highland Model 3 on Testing Ground. The refreshed Model 3's video is shared on Twitter by @JowuaLife. In a nutshell, Project Highland involves “substantial redesigning” of Model 3. But until now, nothing’s confirmed what this “substantial redesigning” involves.
JowuaLife told Torque News that the video footage's original source is Drive Tesla Canada.
So let’s start from the very beginning - How did the “Highland” name originate? An internal roadmap is supposedly the first ever public mention of the Project Highland along with several other codenames such as “Everest” for Cybertruck. But the thought that went behind codenaming Model 3 as “Highland” is still speculated.
Some say the project got its name from the 1986 movie “Highlander” with the famous dialogue “There can only be one.” While others say, it is named after Ford’s revolutionary Highland Park Plant with the first moving assembly line for car manufacturing.
But while nothing is confirmed of name origins, other speculations include those about what the “significant redesign” entails.
Exterior aesthetics with sleeker headlights and even more streamlined form is surely expected.
Leaked images also show curiosity-generating missing fog lights. Some are saying they are integrated within the headlights while others believe they are totally phased out.
Tesla does aim at reducing components to reduce costs, so the latter might very well be true.
Front bumper could be without ultrasonic sensors, which means only vision-based assistance will be present such as the blind-spot improving camera, & additional side cameras.
Sleeker side mirrors, reduced Tesla hood branding, & repositioned reverse lights are also expected.
Interior-wise, first glimpses suggest “Smart Shift” replacing the traditional gear stalk with on-screen controls.
Also, ventilated seats are very likely, wooden dashboard is replaced, ambient lighting is added in the cabin, and an upgraded sound system is installed.
Tesla also aims to converge Model 3's production technology to Model S and Y and use a revamped CATL M3P LFP 66 kWh battery instead of a 60 kWh to add 30 miles to Highland’s range.
