Get the iPad: https://geni.us/ipad10
This is Apple new iPad. Not the iPad Air or iPad Pro or mini - it's the new entry level iPad. It looks great and feels great in the hand, and has several improvements that I think make it the absolute best entry-level yellow iPad that Apple has ever made. However, there are also a couple of head-scratching decisions here that I think have left many people a little confused. So, let's talk about this new iPad, get to the iPad unboxing, what I love about it, and why Apple likely made some of the decisions that they did.
At first glance, you might mistake the new iPad for the iPad Air. It's got the new, squared off design with the flat sides and an array of fun colors, similar to the M1 iPad Air that was released back in March of this year.
It's definitely a welcome departure from the previous entry-level iPads. Gone is the home button, the large top and bottom bezels, and the lightning port. In it's place is the larger liquid retina display with a much smaller border, Touch ID in the top button, stereo speakers, and a USB-C port.
However, not everything has seen an upgrade. You still have a non-laminated display with an air gap separating the glass and pixels. USB-C is a welcome change for charging, but it's relegated to USB 2.0 speeds - USB 2.0 was released 22 years ago, and USB 3.0 is 14 years old for the record. You can also attach a 4K display at up to 30Hz, or 1080p at 60Hz.
The new iPad support the first generation Apple Pencil that was released 7 years ago. The same Apple Pencil that has a Lightning connector built into the end of it, which you plug directly into the iPad for the initial pairing, as well as charging. Except this new iPad no longer has a Lightning port, and there's no way to plug Lighting into a USB-C port. This means that if you want to use the Apple Pencil with this iPad, you also need this $9 USB-C to Apple Pencil adapter.
Apple has moved the front camera over to the side of the iPad, which means when you're using it in landscape orientation, the camera is centered rather than being off to the side. This is great and makes you look much more natural on video calls.
