Welcome to this online recital from St. Bartholomew’s Church, Armley on the wonderful Schulze Organ! My friend and colleague Stefan Kagl from Herford Cathedral (Germany) was due to play this concert today, but sadly, Covid-19 intervened. So instead, here’s a programme of music I’ve recorded by Gerard Bunk, Francis Jackson, J. S. Bach and Franz Liszt. The Dutch organist Gerard Bunk was born in Rotterdam in 1888, but spent most of his life in Dortmund. I’m playing some of his early works: a Prelude and Fugue in A minor, and a lyrical Romance.
Francis Jackson’s Festal Prelude is based on the well-known hymn ‘Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of Creation’ and that’s followed by his haunting Prelude on an American Folk Hymn, ‘Lonesome Valley’. The Bach work is his majesterial Fantasie and Fugue in C minor, BWV 537. Finally, I’m playing Franz Liszt’s Variations on ‘Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen’. The bass ostinato theme that dominates this piece was used by Bach, both in his cantata of that name, BWV12, and in the ‘Crucifixus’ of his B minor Mass. These sombre Variations, originally for piano, were written by the composer in memory of his son Daniel, who died in 1859, age just 20. Only three years later did Liszt add the final chorale (‘Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan’ - “What God ordains is for the best”) as an antidote to the pervasive themes of suffering and torture. My transcription, based on this expanded 1862 version for piano, is receiving its first performance. If you enjoy today’s recital you can make a donation to the church and organ through the crowdfunding platform GoFundMe: just click on the link: https://www.gofundme.com/helping-st-barts-and-the-schulze-organ. 100% of donations go to the charity.
