BAMAKO: Two soldiers died in an attack blamed on terrorists in central Mali on Friday, several sources said, with UN peacekeepers fighting off gunmen in a separate incident toward the Algeria border.
A Mali army officer said a “terrorist attack” against a military post in Diafarabe, a town 350 km northeast of the capital Bamako, “left two of our ranks dead and six wounded.”
“We are in control of the situation,” the officer said, adding that five “terrorists” had been killed in the fighting.
A witness who gave his name as Youssouf Aya said he saw armed men on motorbikes heading toward the military post and then he heard gunshots.
Under the “red list, the only UK, Irish nationals and those with residency rights in the UK can travel to Britain if they were in Pakistan ten days before their arrival to the UK and they would be required to pay for a mandatory ten-day quarantined hotel stay.
Umar questioned if the ban on Pakistan has any scientific basis or has been done on the basis of foreign policy bias. Umar in a tweet said “Every country has a right to make decisions to safeguard the health of their citizens. However, the recent decision by the UK govt to add some countries including Pakistan on the red list raises a legitimate question of whether the choice of countries is based on science or foreign policy.”
Similarly, Pakistan descent British MP, Naz Shah said “ as of today, the South African variant isn’t a concern in Pakistan whereas this isn’t the case for example in France and other countries. This begs the question why hasn’t the government extended the red list to France, Germany, and India?” She termed the decision as discriminatory to Pakistan and its diaspora in the UK.
“Further, it was knowingly and consciously discriminating against Pakistan and the Pakistani diaspora community,” added the British MP. She tweeted, Why aren’t countries which have significantly more cases, including the South African variant, not on the red list too?
Supporting the argument, MP Shah cited infection figures prevalent in several regional and European countries and compared those with few of Pakistan, to question the British government decision. “According to recently available data for the last seven days France, Germany, and India have a substantially higher number of infections per 100,000.”The figures quoted by Shah are Pakistan: 13, UK: 54, Bangladeshi: 15, Germany: 137, Kenya: 17, India: 24, and France: 403.” The government isn’t serious about protecting the British public as it's applying decisions led by politics, not data.”
More than 40 children have died and hundreds of people have disappeared since the Feb.1 coup divided Myanmar, and the international community has once again raised questions over the violent crackdown by the military junta on pro-democracy protesters.
The military's ruthless suppression of demonstrations against its Feb. 1 power grab has left 543 civilians dead, including 44 children, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), a local monitoring organization.
As well as breaking up protests with tear gas, rubber bullets and live rounds, security forces have detained some 2,700 people. Violence has ramped up in recent weeks, with Save the Children saying the death toll of youngsters had more than doubled in the past 12 days.
"We are shocked that children continue to be among the targets of these fatal attacks, despite repeated calls to protect children from harm," the charity said in a statement.
"It is especially horrifying that several of these children were reportedly killed at home, where they should have been safe from harm."
The authorities have made numerous arrests during night raids on the homes of people suspected of supporting the rallies or the civil disobedience movement that has sprung up aimed at stopping the military from running the country.
