Borderless Africa: Ethereum’s pathway to scale through mass adoption

Yoseph Ayele takes the stage at #EDCON2023 and talks about the vision of borderless Africa. He briefly introduces himself and maintains that Web3 needs Africa to reach its full potential. He says currently 5 or 10 (sometimes 15) percent of the world is working in this space but if we’re talking about mass adoption or real-world use cases of Web3, the masses are not with the technologies being built and Africa is a big part of that. He believes that Africa is the last frontier market because Africa is transforming so fast right now due to 4 main driving forces, namely demographic changes, internet & information flow, technology access, and institutional vacuums. With all these forces, he believes that Africa is ripe for decentralization, which is because centralization is failing Africa.

Yoseph says the predatory financial systems today are hauling us back in a massive way, such as Africa as a continent pays $5-10B per year on SWIFT fees. He believes that the US dollar stablecoins have found the best market fit in Africa. Decentralization also solves trust as Africa has low-trust institutions. Another aspect of why decentralization matters is the borderless economy. He believes Ethereum can play a big role in the African story. With Ethereum, the Mainnet is just not accessible in Africa because people there are very transaction cost-sensitive and no one is gonna spend 5 dollars for a dollar transaction, but now with layer 2 networks and ZK technologies and all other experiments that are happening to build on top of Ethereum security layer, that is making Ethereum a lot more accessible and reachable to Africa.
