COVID-19 has significantly impacted on societies and healthcare sectors worldwide. New needs in terms of research, diagnostics, treatments, and care emerged in rapid pace and brought with them substantial implications for value creation. While significant change in how value was being created and captured in health care was already underway before the pandemic, it accelerated this dynamic and brought to the fore the timeliness of rethinking the relationship between digital innovation and value creation in health care.

The research field of information systems has a rich history of researching health care IT (Agarwal 2010; Baird et al. 2018). However, most of the research that has been carried in this context focuses on issues related to health care information technology in hospitals. While insightful and rich, this raises questions in terms of how the according theory generalizes to contemporary phenomena surrounding digital innovation in health care. Specifically, data is not necessarily the same as information technology; particularly hospital information systems. Likewise, hospital information systems oftentimes provide support functions to medicals and managers whereas contemporary phenomena seem to suggest that data are at the center of creating value in health care. Finally, the artifacts differ as platforms, machine learning algorithms, smartphones and other consumer IT become central and important for creating value from digital innovation in health care. These developments suggest that new fields are emerging beyond the established market of heath care information technology supporting hospitals and patient care. In this panel, we want to focus on questions related to these emerging fields. Our particular focus is on the role that data play in the creation of value in health care and the challenges associated with using data in transforming value creation in health care.
