Gene editing refers to the process of genetically modifying living organisms – from single-cell bacteria all the way up to humans themselves.
This process has opened up endless possibilities for humanity, from curing diseases to changing people's appearance.

One of the companies leading the way when it comes to this remarkable gene-editing process is CRISPR Therapeutics.

CRISPR Therapeutics was formed back in 2013 by a group of doctors and revolutionaries who envisioned using genetic engineering to create medical therapies.

Two of the company's founders, Jennifer Doudna and Emmanuelle Charpentier, rocked the world back in 2012 when they published their unbelievable findings that CRISPR-cas9 technology could be used to modify the DNA of living organisms.

CRISPR-cas9 (sometimes referred to as just CRISPR) is a type of technology that allows geneticists and medical personnel to edit parts of the genome.

This editing can be done by removing, adding, or even changing parts of the DNA sequence.

In terms of how the whole gene-editing process works, it involves two key molecules – cas9 and RNA.

Cas9 is a special type of enzyme that allows geneticists to 'cut' the DNA strands in an organism, meaning they can add or remove bits of DNA to achieve a specific result.

The best way to visualize the cas9 enzyme is as a fancy pair of scissors – nifty, eh?

The other molecule that helps in this gene-editing process is RNA – specifically guide RNA.

This helpful piece of RNA ‘guides’ the cas9 enzyme to the correct part of the DNA strand – cause we don’t want to cut the wrong part, that wouldn’t be good!

Once the DNA strand is cut, and the specific alterations to the DNA are made, the particular cell that is being worked on realizes that it has been damaged – and then begins to repair itself.

There are so many potential ways that CRSPR can be used. The main ones that seem to draw the most attention are the potential uses in regards to treating cancer, HIV, and heart disease. There is even scope to modify the human genome of unborn babies, allowing specific appearance characteristics to be implanted and therefore leading to the term 'designer babies'.

What is CRSP Therapeutics doing now?
The company has been exploring potential uses for this incredible technology over the past seven years, both commercially and in terms of advanced research.

CRSPR Therapeutics is currently looking at the applications that CRSPR technology could have in the field of stem cell therapy and whether there's scope to develop treatments that can regenerate lost tissue and treat a wide range of diseases.

So, although the potential medical advancements are exciting, we may not see practical applications for 5, maybe 10, years.

CRSPR Therapeutics has had a rough start to 2021 in terms of stock price.

After hitting an all-time high of $220 back in early January, CRSPR’s stock was recently down nearly 45% from those lofty heights.

And with the potential release date for CRSPR-produced drugs being years away, thinking about the company from a longer-term perspective is vital.

my opinion, CRSPR Therapeutics is one of the most promising companies in the world – mainly down to the potential uses of their incredible gene-editing technology.

Looking at how it can be used to treat various diseases, it can be easy to assume that the company is poised for greatness.
