CSFI Economic Outlook... A half-century of pain, with Andrew Hilton

Why you should watch: For his 50th Weekly Outlook, Andrew Hilton focuses on an increasingly assertive Chinese Communist Party, which is currently holding its rubber-stamp Parliament in Beijing, and on the split among Western economists on the threat of inflation and on the need for governments (in Yellen's words) to 'go big'. His view (FWIW) is that caution is justified in the US, where the economy is picking up speed and where previous stimulus packages have not been fully utilised, but that Europe is lagging - and, hence, might need a bit more goosing. But, with money supply surging and commodity prices popping, economists are right to warn of inflation. Other issues - trade, the implosion of Greensill Capital, and the continued problems of defining a longer term relationship between the UK and its former friends in the EU. It was a busy week.

In his Weekly Economic Outlook, Andrew Hilton, the CSFI’s Director, discusses the current crisis, its impact on the global economy, and what we may be missing.

Andrew is a former World Bank economist, who also ran a small economic consultancy advising international clients, particularly in the Middle East. He has an MA from New College, Oxford, an MBA from Wharton, and an MA and PhD from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a Thouron Scholar and Kent Fellow.
