David Friedman Generations Quartet "Three Spheres
TODAY: Spontaneous Creations
David Friedman is considered to be one of the most influential vibraphonists in the history of the instrument. Internationally renowned as a vibraphonist, marimbist, composer and jazz educator, he has his own musical message, born of fascinatingly diverse musical influences. Having worked with such varied musical personalities as Leonard Bernstein, Luciano Berio, Bobby McFerrin, Wayne Shorter and Yoko Ono, few jazz musicians can claim as broad a spectrum of performing and recording experience.
Through his position as Director of the Jazz Department at UdK, David transformed ‘90s Berlin into the European Mecca for Vibraphonists, creating a hub for musicians of all genres across the world.
In Friedman’s years as a professor, he was not only a mentor, but also a collegial friend to young artists, such as the pianist Clara Haberkamp and the percussionist Tilo Weber. Aside from his musical collaboration with these newcomers to the German Jazz scene, he’s also developed a close friendship with the two Berliners-by-choice.
The Generations Quartet is rounded out by the bassist, Josh Ginsburg, who recently relocated his musical talents from New York to Berlin. Together, these four perform unconventionally fresh arrangements of famous Jazz standards, original Compositions by David and Free Group Improvisations.
For this legendary vibraphonist, the Generations Quartet isn’t a musical reboot with three young musicians. Rather, these four radically different characters blend into a lively, symbiotic entity. This band achieves an exceptional union between the time-honoured Jazz Standards of the Great American Songbooks and the free improvisation and new sound of contemporary Jazz.
In 2017 David Friedman and Tilo Weber founded the independent Jazz label MALLETMUSE RECORDS.
