Five free agents Manchester United could target to save millions in the summer transfer window.
Manchester United is looking to strengthen in a number of positions this season and some high-profile players will soon be out of contract at their current clubs.

Manchester United could well see a number of incomings in the summer transfer window, with the Reds looking to strengthen in various positions.

A new center-back and a new striker are at the top of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's shopping list, and United could well look to add both a midfielder and a winger too.

Yet with Covid-19 having had a damaging effect on finances in football, it remains to be seen exactly how much money United will spend With that being the case, United could well be keeping an eye on which players are out of contract in the summer to see if there are any bargains to be had.

Here are five players who are set to be available on a free transfer in the summer and could save United millions.

Number one... David Alaba.

Slightly fanciful, this one, but Alaba is set to leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season when his contract expires.

At 28, any club signing Alaba will be getting a leading defender in his prime years.

While the Austria international is most prominently known as a left-back, Alphonso Davies’ emergence at Bayern has seen Alaba shift into the center of defense, where he has continued to impress, meaning he could be an option for the left-sided center-back spot.

Alaba is already said to have turned down a lucrative offer from PSG, and reports in Germany claim he is keen on a move to either Barcelona or Real Madrid in the summer.

United in their current guise, trophyless since 2017, might struggle to attract a player who will pretty much have his pick of clubs across Europe.

Number two... Memphis Depay

Although he underwhelmed in his first stint at United between 2015 and 2017, Depay has developed into a more consistent attacker at Lyon.

With 15 goals in 31 appearances for Lyon this season, Depay is only seven strikes short of his most prolific campaign since moving to France.

Barcelona is currently the favorites to land the 27-year-old after a move to the Nou Camp fell through last summer.

United insisted on a buy-back clause being inserted into Depay's contract when the forward moved to France in 2017 but that won't give them an advantage in trying to sign him if he is a free agent, and there is currently no suggestion they are interested in bringing him back anyway.

Number three... Florian Thauvin

He may have been a flop at Newcastle United, managing just 13 goalless Premier League appearances in 2015/16 before being shipped back out to Marseille, but since returning to France, the right-winger has blossomed into an impressive attacker.

More famous at Newcastle for turning up to matches in a tuxedo than anything he did on the pitch, Thauvin has proven himself to be a dangerous winger in Ligue 1.

He missed the majority of last season with an ankle injury, playing just twice, but has regained fitness to net eight in 36 this season for an underperforming Marseille side.

While he may not be the world-class signing that many United fans crave on the right-wing if Thauvin is able to regain his best form, his dribbling, passing, and finishing ability would certainly make him one to run the rule over if he is available on a free transfer.

Number four... Julian Draxler

It doesn't look like United needs a new attacking midfielder, but question marks over Paul Pogba’s future and Donny van de Beek’s poor start to life at Old Trafford mean that it could be a position to keep an eye on.

Draxler is almost certain to leave PSG in the summer at the end of his contract after falling out of favor in the French capital.

Yet, at 27, the German still offers a creative presence in midfield and would be a bargain if signed on a free transfer.

Able to play both in the center of midfield and as an attacking midfielder, Draxler would take the pressure off Bruno Fernandes and certainly inject some much-needed creativity in the middle of the park for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Number five... Lionel Messi

Even more fanciful than Alaba, perhaps, but Messi’s future at Barcelona remains up in the air, despite the suggestion that he is much happier in Catalonia than he was a few months back.
