Free trade as an opportunity in the crisis

The Covid-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted people's lives worldwide, both socially and economically. The level of global uncertainty has risen and with it the manifold challenges to the principles and mechanisms of the multilateral world order.
In these difficult times - with millions of people suffering the dire economic consequences of the crisis - it has become all the more important for policy makers to advance policies and reforms that can help to restore people's trust and optimism in their future economic perspectives.
Looking at South America, currently a global hotspot of the Corona-pandemic, the ratification of the free trade agreement between the South American Mercosur trade bloc and the European Union could play an important role for the economic revival of the block's member states. That said, there are doubts - on both sides of the negotiating table - about the effectiveness of the agreement.
A few days before Germany takes over the presidency of the European Council, our webinar intends to discuss the status and perspectives of the EU-Mercosur agreement.
We will be joined by experts from academia, business and politics to look, among others, at the following questions:
Does the current global crisis pose more of a threat or a window of opportunity for the agreement? What impact does the reluctance of Argentina’s government have on the ratification process of the free trade agreement? What does the agreement really hold in store for the more than 770 million inhabitants of the two trade blocks? What role does regional economic cooperation play in creating new opportunities for people in these difficult times? How can the EU-Mercosur free trade agreement contribute to a more stable and sustainable recovery? And last, but not least: What can Germany do during its presidency of the EU-Council to advance the agreement?
We invite you to join us for this important discussion.
