A German Health Ministry spokesperson confirmed the recent comments by Health Minister Jens Spahn that he is open to the use of the Russian 'Sputnik V' vaccine in Europe pending its approval by the European Medicines Agency, at a press conference in Berlin on Wednesday.

"The federal health minister has already emphasised in an interview with the 'FAS' last weekend, that nothing speaks against using a Russian vaccine in Europe," said spokesperson Teresa Nauber.

Retelling Spahn's comments, Nauber added that "'it's decisive to have a regular admission based on European law. Of course, when a vaccine is safe and efficient, it can help to fight the pandemic, no matter in which country it has been produced.''

German Chancellor Angela Merkel commented on Tuesday that "every vaccine is welcome in the European Union" during an interview with Germany's ARD and welcomed the publishing of new data on the high efficacy of the 'Sputnik V' vaccine in the Lancet, one of the world's most respected medical journals.

The new data from some 20,000 participants in an ongoing trial indicates that the vaccine, which faced scepticism outside of Russia after being rushed into use without completing large-scale trials, has 91.6 percent efficacy against the symptomatic disease.

SOT, Teresa Nauber, German Health Ministry spokesperson (German): "At the moment, this vaccine isn't authorised in Europe. Beyond this, I told you everything, that I can tell you.''

SOT Steffen Seibert, German government spokesperson (German): "Firstly, it must have a request with the EMA (European Medicines Agency), presentation of all necessary evidence, documentation, test series and so on with the EMA.''

SOT, Teresa Nauber, German Health Ministry spokesperson (German): "In the first quarter [of 2021], we [Germany] will receive 11 million doses from BioNTech, 1.8 million from Moderna and 5.6 million from AstraZeneca. Regarding the EU quantities, honestly said you have to request from the EU.''
