Many main squares and popular monuments in Berlin cut their lights out on Saturday evening in order to take part with the WWF's (World Wildlife Fund) 'Earth Hour' initiative.
Since 2007, when WWF Australia launched the initiative, millions of people have taken part in the global event to raise awareness about climate change. As taking part in the day is as simple as switching off the lights, the day is observed by millions of people and organisations in various countries.
Footage shows Berlin's Brandenburg Gate, Potsdamer Platz and Sony centre, turning off the lights for an hour on Saturday evening. They were joined by some of the worlds' most iconic landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, Tokyo Skytree, Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour, St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, the Colosseum in Rome, and many more that took part by switching off this year.
"We we have more than 500 cities that are participating and contributing to the 'Earth Hour,' we have more than 450 companies who are supporting us. We think we really can send a sign tonight for climate protection, for nature protection," explained WWF Germany's executive director of communications Marco Vollmar.
SOT, Marco Vollmar, WWF Germany executive director of communications (English): "Today we are celebrating the global 'Earth Hour.' It's a global demonstration, corona-safe, so to say. It's a digital celebration against climate change. WWF (World Wildlife Fund) wants to fight for strengthening the conscious of the climate protection for the nature, for the planet, and this is what we are doing today."
