Germany: Thousands attend 'Black Lives Matter' demo in Munich

Thousands of protesters decrying police brutality and standing against racism, descended on Munich streets on Saturday to take part in a 'Black Lives Matter' rally.

Protesters holding signs and banners were seen flocking to the city's iconic King's Square, where a moment of silence while kneeling was observed, and chats repeating George Floyd's last words 'I can't breathe' were shouted out loud.

Tina Love, a protester who said she had experienced racism before, explained she was at the demonstration to stand up against racism and show that black people also belong to Germany and should not be a minority.

"No matter what, no matter which country you come from, no matter what skin colour you have, whether you are white or black, the main thing is that we are all the same," said another demonstrator, Abdrahan.

Protests sparked by George Floyd's death at the hands of police in Minneapolis have been taking place since May, 26 in the US and around the world.

George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, was killed during an arrest in Minneapolis on May 25, after officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes despite Floyd saying he couldn't breathe.
