How You Can Be Sure a Used Tesla Is a Reliable Purchase

In this update Tesla owners talk about the reliability of used Tesla vehicles and how to ensure you purchase a reliable used Tesla (See https://www.torquenews.com/1083/used-tesla-buyers-guide-why-normal-rules-dont-apply). I hope this used Tesla buying guide can help you if you are interested in buying a pre-owned Tesla vehicle.

First tip comes from Hagrinas Mivali, who is a Tesla owner and says if you choose to buy a certified pre-owned car from Tesla, you will have a full warranty. If you buy elsewhere, consider that most of the cars they ever made are new enough to be under warranty, and will be unless the mileage is too high. Hagrinas also writes "If you buy one with remaining warranty, it’s a good bet that the previous owner got any problems fixed under warranty. You could find out if the previous owner took the vehicle in for a recent annual service. The lack of doing so won’t hurt the car, but it it was done, it would have gotten a thorough inspection and anything wrong would have been fixed under warranty. If it’s through a private sale, you could make it contingent on the current owner having the annual service visit, and if that raises the price of the car by a few hundred dollars, it would be money well spent."

When purchasing a used Tesla check the interior, paint condition and suspension. These are, of course, obvious things to check, but the most important thin in buying a used Tesla or any electric vehicle is the battery condition and its warranty.

Tim Nguyen from Quora says take the following points into consideration of a battery and its warranty when buying a used Tesla.

• What's the rated range at max 100% charge? An 85kwH battery from the factory shows 265 miles.

• Don't believe what you hear about a battery warranty. There is no official number that says what is actually covered. Tesla will protect you against extreme cases of degradation, but it hasn't been clearly defined. Tesla honors this on a case by case basis. Luckily, from the report above, many owner’s batteries are doing better than expected.

• Drive the car and get on a flat road at 65 mph and drive it for 10 miles (ac off!). The energy graph should be right on the dotted rated range line and your rated miles should have decreased by 10. If you did better, great, if worse, then it may be signs of faster degradation (drive it for longer to rule out any oddities in the test drive).

I saw another good tip about buying a used Tesla from Jeffrey Hudson, who is a Model 3 Performance owner since 2018.

Hudson says, "The best way would be to buy it directly from Tesla because of their 4 year, 50,000 mile limited warranty on pre-owned vehicles which is in addition to their 8 year unlimited mile warranty on the battery and motor(s). Personally, this is the only method I would use to buy a pre-owned Tesla."

While you can check all the references in the sources below, please let us know if you have purchased a used Tesla or an electric vehicle. What has been your experience? What tips can you share to make sure the pre-owned Tesla purchase is a reliable purchase. See my tips at the end of this video update.
