(1 Sep 2020) Moscow schools re-opened on Tuesday for the traditional start of the new school year on 1 September.
New regulations designed to stem the coronavirus pandemic include mandatory mask wearing for school employees, antiseptic stations, and a new schedule dividing students into shifts.
At school number 1619 in the Strogino neighborhood, parents and children carried the traditional flowers and balloons for the opening ceremony for the school year.
The gathering, however, which also featured traditional songs and the ringing of a bell to open the year, was limited to just two grades at a time.
"I have absolutely no concerns (related to the pandemic)," Yekaterina Shibanova, the parent of a new first-grader, told the Associated Press.
"Children must be in school, I'm against online learning," she added.
Yevgeny Skudnov, the principle of the school, said the administration was ready for any developments related to the pandemic.
"We learned a lot when we had to implement distance learning (last spring), and we are ready to switch to this mode at any moment if the situation requires it," he said.
"If one student in a class is diagnosed with the coronavirus, we will be required to switch the class to distance learning for two weeks, and all teachers are ready for this," he added.
Russia’s tally of confirmed coronavirus cases surpassed 1 million on Tuesday as authorities reported 4,729 new cases. Russia has the fourth largest caseload in the world after the U.S., Brazil and India.
Experts say the true toll of the pandemic is much higher than all reported figures, due to limited testing, missed mild cases and concealment of cases by some governments, among other factors.
As of Tuesday, Russia has lifted most lockdown restrictions in the majority of the country’s regions.
