Zugspitze is an ideal day trip from Munich from Skiing (or just enjoying the snow) in Winter. In summer, the area is great for hikes. It is the highest mountain in Germany and lies on the German-Austrian border. On a clear day, you get panoramic views of the Eibsee and German/Austrian alps from the top. In fact once on top, you can cross over from Germany to Austria and vice versa which is so cool.
If time permits, it is highly recommended to visit Garmisch or Mittenwald to see the painted walls of houses. In summer, the Partnach Gorge is also highly recommended.
