STORYLINE
Leftist demonstrators and members of the radical leftist "Black Bloc" joined in Berlin on Friday for the "Revolutionary Mayday demonstration".
Protesters lit coloured flares and shouted "Revolution" and "Anti-capitalista" as they marched the streets of Berlin's Kreuzberg and Neukoelln districts.
Only minor scuffles occurred and the overall mood was calm.
In recent years, May 1 regularly saw violent clashes between police and radical groups in Berlin.
According to the police, 18,000 demonstrators participated in the protest.
