Sidewalk Widths: From Open Data to Open Source

The emergence of COVID-19 made city dwellers hyper-aware of how the width of sidewalks impacts their ability to maintain social distance. In order to help New Yorkers navigate the city's sidewalks, I made a map of NYC's sidewalk widths from NYC Open Data. I then open sourced the project so anyone with a little coding knowledge could copy it, and cities around the world started making their own versions (visible on https://www.sidewalkwidths.com).

Join me for a demo of this project where I will walk you through how to use the Sidewalk Widths open source code to make your own interactive map. This will be a valuable demo for you even if you're new to GIS, coding, or building web maps. If you'd like to follow along on your own computer, I'll provide the tutorial and make myself available for questions afterwards.

ABOUT NYC OPEN DATA WEEK
Open Data Week is a week-long festival of community-driven events organized and produced by the NYC Mayor’s Office of Data Analytics and BetaNYC. Every year, New Yorkers come together all across the boroughs to celebrate New York City’s Open Data Law, which was signed into law on March 7, 2012. Coincidentally, the first weekend of March is also International Open Data Day. Together, we use both dates to anchor NYC’s Open Data Week and increase civic engagement with our municipal open data.
