We are at a crossroad where we need to ensure that the right policies are in place as the EU steps up its engagement and implementation of the EU Green Deal. Limiting the global temperature rise to 1.5 °C will require efforts by governments and businesses around the world. The EU is a global leader on climate action. The European Council has endorsed the objective of a climate neutral EU by 2050. The EU Green Deal sets out a way forward for achieving climate neutrality, increasing green investments, creating opportunities for new green jobs- and businesses, increasing standards of sustainable living and improving well-being.

Sweden would like to provide a platform for a discussion on how to operationalise the EU Green Deal within EU development cooperation, and, in so doing, reinforce EU leadership globally. Implementation of the EU Green Deal in the area of development cooperation should go hand in hand with COVID-19 recovery efforts to ensure they are in line with the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. We must ensure that EU global leadership and development cooperation are a force for a green recovery and building back better and greener societies. As we enter the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, biodiversity, ecosystems, and nature-based solutions are at centre of sustainable development and poverty reduction. Human rights, gender equality and women´s empowerment are the foundation of a world that is fair and equal.

The EU is collectively the world’s biggest aid donor, providing over EUR 50 billion per year to supporting poverty alleviation and advancing global sustainable development. To match the ambitions and meet the objectives of the EU Green Deal and the EU´s global leadership, EU development cooperation should seize the opportunities to accelerate the green transition and achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
