Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s Twitter Hacked as Part of Massive Bitcoin Scam

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Bill Gates, and other high-profile Twitter accounts got hacked on Wednesday afternoon as part of a coordinated cryptocurrency scam targeting major crypto exchanges and personalities.

“I’m feeling generous because of Covid-19. I’ll double any BTC payment sent to my BTC address in the next hour. Good luck, and stay safe out there!” read a tweet sent to Elon Musk’s nearly 37 million Twitter followers from his account.

Suspected scammers have taken over a rash of high-profile Twitter accounts, including those of Joe Biden, Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Kanye West, apparently looking to swindle users out of large sums of cryptocurrency.

The spate of apparent hacks unfolded on Wednesday afternoon, with Musk sending out a number of tweets including a Bitcoin address, offering to hand out thousands of dollars in the electronic currency – so long as he received $1,000 first.

Musk’s compromised posts were soon followed by similar offers from Gates, West, Bezos, and Biden. The accounts of Mike Bloomberg and a handful of companies, including Apple, were also swept up in the scam.

While it remains unclear how the hackers gained access to so many accounts, Twitter has acknowledged the unprecedented security breach and said it is now “investigating and taking steps to fix it.”

Bitcoin transaction receipts show that the address listed in the scam tweets has received more than 11 Bitcoin — or roughly $101,300 — but it's possible that some or all of transactions were carried out by the scammers to make their account appear more legitimate.

So, there are people sophisticated enough to hold bitcoins, but not smart (and greedy) enough to send it to an apparently "hacked" message, and have no other job than to monitor Gates' and Musk's twitter? What a life!
You would think people who are techy enough to own cryptocurrency will be knowledgeable enough to not fall for this. Someone said greedy people are the easiest to scam.
