As part of the US Army's efforts to modernize its forces, a new vehicle called the Mobile Protected Firepower or MPF has recently been developed. Two prototypes were in the running; a modernized M8 AGS from BAE Systems, and a new vehicle called the Griffin II from General Dynamics Land Systems. The Griffin II is based on the Ajax AFV, itself based on the ASCOD AFV. The Griffin II beat the modernized M8 AGS, in part because BAE failed to meet requirements. The MPF is designed to be a sort of light tank or self-propelled gun that will accompany infantry units into areas where heavier assets such as the M1 Abrams would be unable to go. The Army is emphatic that the MPF is not a light tank, as they don't want MPF crews to go off and pick fights with main battle tanks. We'll be taking a look at the MPF's specifications and design. Interestingly, it uses or can use some parts that were displayed on the AbramsX technology demonstrator.
