Spin is a shared electric scooter company that provides dockless mobility systems in the US. Found in 2016, the company marks its footsteps in the city of Cologne, Germany. Spin’s European expansion is part of a trend that was emerging before COVID-19 altered the economy. The company was acquired by Ford in 2018 for about US$100 million, now plans to expand in German cities Dortmund and Essen. European and U.S.-based companies - Lime, Bird and Circ, Swedish startup Voi and German startup Tier, were contending for market share. The pandemic caused a number of scooters and bike-share companies to pause operations or even pull out of cities altogether. Since April, new daily active users have increased an average 34% week over week, as per reports. According to the recent survey conducted by Spin and YouGov, nearly 50% of people opt for solo transportation as their mode of commute. Spin also plans to expand beyond Germany and has applied for permits in Lyon and Paris in France. It has submitted a proposal for a rental e-scooter pilot in U.K. cities, including Birmingham, Liverpool, London, and Manchester.
