I love language, and I joined the NYC Teaching Fellows to help students in our marginalized community acquire and master English. That dream was dashed, however, and I now teach English Composition in the City University system. What seemed like a bum steer turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

I love what I do; teaching college courses to high schoolers from my borough—The Bronx—which is the poorest county in New York State, and the most overlooked in New York City in nearly every way imaginable.

Due to COVID-19, classes were shunted online, but I was still able to teach. This semester was the most rewarding yet, of my time as an adjunct. Alas, though, the Spring Semester is now over and, as such, so are my classes.

Yet, I always want to impart information that I think is interesting and (I would hope) valuable. Sure, it's an obvious conceit to make a language and phonology lesson from my own last name, but, in so doing, I mean to illustrate that there are stories everywhere.

I encourage you to investigate the story of your own name, the pronunciation of it, and how it has (likely) changed over the years or over generations.

I hope that you enjoy watching this as much as I did making it. Please comment vociferously. I love constructive feedback and, of course, compliments ... but—more than anything—I'd love to hear your stories, too.
