overview:
BMW's entry-level SUV, the X1, has been our favorite for a while, thanks to its agile handling, willing nature and practical shape. The 2023 model has received a complete redesign that looks like a sweeping upgrade over last year's model, with improvements to the chassis, drivetrain and interior. Under the hood, the new 241-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine is paired with standard all-wheel drive and a seven-speed automatic transmission. Unlike its main competitor, the Mercedes-Benz GLB class, the X1 remains a two-row SUV, but its slightly larger exterior dimensions have translated into extra space in the cabin, according to BMW. Speaking of the interior, it's been updated with a more modern design and the latest tech features, including the brand's iDrive 8 infotainment setup.

What's New in 2023?
BMW has redesigned the X1 SUV for 2023. A more powerful four-cylinder engine sits behind a bolder double kidney grille. Its larger exterior dimensions promise slightly more interior space for passengers and cargo than the previous generation.

Pricing and Which One to Buy?
xDrive28i: $39,595

This time, there's only one trim to choose from and it comes with standard all-wheel drive; The front-wheel drive version of the sDrive28i does not continue with the next generation. There may be a model with a higher performance M badge on the wings, but for now the X1 only gets an M Sport equipment package that adds special visual cues and an adaptive M suspension. The xDrive28i comes with a lot of standard equipment, but we recommend adding the optional Convenience package that includes keyless entry, panoramic sunroof, auto-dimming mirrors and a wireless smartphone charging pad.

Engine, Transmission and Performance
Like the outgoing model, the 2023 X1 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, but the new model has 241 horsepower, 13 horsepower more than its predecessor. All-wheel drive is standard this time around, and the X1 also gets a new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The X1 xDrive28i we tested reached 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds. Its redesigned suspension improves handling and stability, making the X1 a fun ride on winding roads. An optional M Sport package (don't confuse this with an M model that may come later) adds performance-enhancing features such as an adaptive suspension system and steering wheel-mounted shift paddles. The M Sport package also adds more aggressively padded seats, a unique steering wheel and a few sporty-looking exterior tweaks.

Fuel Economy and Real World MPG:
The EPA estimates that the 2023 X1 should deliver 25 mpg city and 34 mpg highway, which is slightly better than the 2022 model on both metrics. When we get a chance to test the new X1 on our 75 mph highway fuel economy route, we'll update this story with the results. For more information on the X1's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website.
