The Brussels conferences have over the years become an opportunity to reassert the international community’s continued support to the UN and to mobilise necessary financial support to meet needs of Syrians and their host communities, as well as to pursue and deepen dialogue with civil society.

In view of COVID-19 restrictions, the conference will take place in virtual format.

In the framework of the upcoming 5th Brussels Conference ‘Supporting the future of Syria and the region' on 29-30 March, the Commission launched a virtual consultation with civil society organisations to gather recommendations on key issues affecting the civil society, people inside Syria, Syrian refugees and hosting communities in the neighbouring countries. The survey remains open until 2 March. In parallel, EU Delegations and the United Nations are organising discussions with civil society actors in Syria and the region. The outcomes of these consultations will be presented during the Conference and will contribute to shape the international community's response and ensure its relevance. Co-chaired by the EU and the United Nations, the Conference will consist of the Day of Dialogue with civil society (29 March) and the Ministerial meeting (30 March).

15 March will mark the 10th anniversary of the Syrian uprising. The conflict still ongoing, the situation in Syria and the region remains highly critical, with the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic and the deterioration of the economies across the region over the last year further exacerbating the dire humanitarian situation inside Syria and the conditions for Syrian refugees and their host communities in neighbouring countries.

The Brussels Conferences have over the years become an opportunity to reassert the international community's continued support to the UN and the UN Special Envoy's efforts for a negotiated political solution to the Syrian conflict in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254. They also serve to mobilise necessary financial support to meet needs of Syrians and their host communities, as well as to pursue and deepen dialogue with civil society.

The European Union will continue mobilising all the tools at its disposal in support of the Syrian people, to finally reach a negotiated political solution and help create the conditions for a brighter future for all Syrians.

The Brussels Conference keeps the Syrian conflict at the top of the international agenda. We must do more to end the suffering of the Syrian people. First and foremost, we need a political solution to the crisis.: It is time to unlock the Geneva talks, forge a political solution and bring an inclusive peace to Syria. We will also continue to respond to persisting enormous humanitarian needs.
Josep Borrell Fontelles, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Vice-President of the Commission

The conference succeeded in mobilising aid to Syrians inside the country and in the neighbouring countries, including for hosting communities, through pledges totalling US$ 5.5 billion (€4.9 billion) for 2020, and multi-year pledges of close to US$ 2.2 billon (€2 billion) for 2021 and beyond.

The Fourth Conference on "Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region" took place on 30 June 2020 in a virtual format. It was hosted by the European Union (EU) and co-chaired with the United Nations (UN). The Conference was preceded by virtual Days of Dialogue and by a week of side events.
Building upon the work of the conferences held in Kuwait (2013-15), London (2016) and Brussels (2017-19), Brussels IV renewed and strengthened the political, humanitarian and financial commitment of the international community to support the Syrian people, the neighbouring countries and the communities most affected by the conflict. The Conference brought together 84 delegations including 57 States, 10 regional organisations and International Financial Institutions as well as 17 UN agencies.
