Although it moves a lot like XCOM, Phoenix Point is packed with distinct features, from the Geoscape to advanced faction diplomacy. In this Phoenix Point review, we look at the best and the worst bits. Oh, and check out our Rock Paper Shotgun Displate store here: https://displate.com/rockpapershotgun?art=5d947922ad0d0
Is Phoenix Point worth it? We’ve got a full Phoenix Point review on Rock Paper Shotgun, but this is the video team’s impressions of the game. Having read mixed things from Phoenix Point Backer Build 5 reports (the last version released to crowdfunders) we had low expectations, but the release version is far from a disaster. As you’ll see from this Phoenix Point gameplay (PC), it hasn’t got the visual splendour of modern XCOM, but it has loads of great ideas, from combat tweaks - free aiming and action points - to massive trucks and the deep strategy of the Geoscape.
Julian Gollop - the head of Snapshot games - knows his way around the genre (he invented many of its underlying ideas) and as you’ll hear in this Phoenix Point test, many are delivered with quirky twists. Due to the procedural nature of the campaign - you start in a different place on the globe, with random events to uncover - we wonder if Phoenix Point impressions might depend on how cruel or kind the game was to you. My advice: don;t freak out about all the flashing symbols and focus on soldier well-being and finding more bases.
If you helped fund the game, we’d love to hear your Phoenix Point analysis - does it live up to expectations? After writing this review, Matthew realised he had a big XCOM shaped hole in his life, so he’s glad that it got made.
We hope you enjoy this Shenmue 3 review. If you have any questions not answered by the video, pop them in the comments. Want to know which research to prioritise? How to build out your squads? Perhaps we can guide you to some of the features the game doesn’t explain that well. May you want to know how long is Phoenix Point? And if you enjoy this PC review, why not watch more.
