Schools, day-care centers, pubs and museums are dark. Everyone who can is working from home. In Germany, public life is at a standstill. It's the only way to protect the population. But the forced vacation is already causing financial hardship.

Many companies have seen orders all but dry up and are now struggling to pay their employees. Workers are left wondering who will look after the children - and how to motivate them to do their schoolwork at home instead of in the classroom. The elderly and people with pre-existing conditions are facing threats direct to life and limb and wondering what will happen if they're infected - especially if the health-care system is overwhelmed. We're reporting on the week in which the state of emergency became the state of normalcy in Germany. A Report by Axel Rowohlt.
