From the beginning of the Corona crisis, the population has been frightened.(1) Also from the beginning, there has been an obvious gap between the data on the threat posed by Sars-Cov2 and the propagated danger to humans. Despite reams of evidence that Covid-19 does not pose a significant threat to the population as a whole,(2) and that almost all measures have had no effect on the incidence of infection, we remain in a pandemic situation.
Since the medical facts about Corona (4) no longer seem to play a meaningful role for policy, it seems appropriate to look more closely at the mass psychology of the current situation. In a conversation with the Swiss psychoanalyst and body psychotherapist, Franz Renggli, I discuss the deeper, psychological dynamics of what is happening. Renggli originally studied zoology and has been accompanying people in intensive therapeutic processes for 50 years. His main topic is the mother-child relationship and its impact on personality development and society. He has also worked on witch burning and the mass psychosis associated with it.
In his home town of Basel, we talk about the potential for fear in the population and the hatred of those who think differently. We also look at the origins of these strong feelings and discover that a sense of powerlessness is often involved in connection with Corona. Furthermore, we ask ourselves why many people do not consider that those in charge might act erroneously and even vehemently reject this idea.
At the end of our interview, we turn our attention to the societal changes that are necessary to enable sustainable change in society.
