Umar Kayam (1932–2002) was an Indonesian man of letters who took a sociological and historical approach in his writing of fiction. That said, he was also flexible enough to go back and forth between the modern and the traditional, and between idiomatic and plain speech. Avianti Armand and Ben Shohib, two of Indonesia most talented authors, have taken a different route though some of Kayam’s influence might have rubbed off on them as is evident in the local and global color in their respective literary work.
