Unable to create sound together on their respective instruments and forced to confine their normal sound making due to Covid-19 restrictions, Jana De Troyer (BE- saxophone) and Kelsey Cotton (AU- voice) seek not only to discover how they can improvise together online, but also how they can embrace these limitations to make site-specific free improvisations within their quarantine environment.
Over the course of their lockdown in Hamburg they have adapted their collaborative practice by turning their attention to their quarantine environment and exploring the sound possibilities of the everyday objects surrounding them. Through improvisation, Jana and Kelsey consider these objects as instruments that could replace, expand or add to their own instrumental practice. They explore what new and creative sound worlds are offered in an environment shaped by its limitations.

Known for her chameleonic musicianship, expressive and extreme vocal palette and her fearless performance of new works, Melbourne born Kelsey Cotton is a distinctive voice in the field of contemporary and experimental music. As a singer she has performed in a myriad of genres, ranging from opera, chamber music, and to free improvisation. Kelsey is a passionate advocate for, and a highly sought-after interpreter of new, experimental and contemporary music and has premiered works across Australia and Europe. She is co-founder and co-director of the contemporary music duo There is no air in Space.
Thrilled by contemporary sounds, Jana De Troyer moves - whether or not accompanied by her saxophones - between the most diverse genres of the 20th and 21st century. She has played extensively in various configurations across an array of genres and styles, including (contemporary) classical, free improvisation, chamber, electronic, orchestral, and big band music. As a performer, composer, conductor and journalist she was on Belgian and German media, and on stages throughout Europe and Asia. Additionally, she is co-founder and co-director of the contemporary music duo There is no air in Space.
