Travellers faced disrupted travel schedules on Monday at Berlin's Hauptbanhof central railway station as train drivers began their second nationwide strike.
The train drivers, represented by the GDL trade union, are undergoing a dispute over pay with the railway operator Deutsche Bahn.
Strike action began in the early hours of Monday and is set to last for 48 hours, dragging into the early hours of Wednesday.
“I can understand this strike, they want of course to push their wage claim through and the [Deutsche] Bahn offer was very vague. So I can understand them. But every one who is affected by it says this is awful," commented Dieter Schlausch, a traveller disrupted by the strike.
In the latest development, GDL rejected an offer made by Deutsche Bahn on Sunday.
The key demands of the union are compromised of a 3.2 percent wage increase, a COVID-19 bonus and better working conditions for workers.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Passenger (German): "We are very affected. We already had to stay 2 hours in front of the travel centre and we still couldn't get any correct information and now we have to wait and see if we can get to Trier anyhow."
SOT, Dieter Schlausch, (German): "I can understand this strike, they want of course to push their wage claim through and the [Deutsche] Bahn offer was very vague. So I can understand them. But every one who is affected by it says this is awful. I want to go to Braumschweig or Hannover and I don't know if I can make it."
SOT, Passenger (German): "I think that the train drivers don't earn so little. There are professions that earn way less and have much more responsibility and much more physical stress."
SOT, Holger Seidel, Passenger (German): "I think this is a very unfortunate time, I have to see how I can get to Stuttgart. My girls also had the same problem two weeks ago with the strike. I think it is inconvenient."
