Hackers have a reputation of being the villains in the shadows, sitting behind their computer screens, participating in digital crimes that can cost their victims millions. We all instantly think of Neo from The Matrix, or possible Lex from Jurassic Park when we hear the word hacker, but you should know, these movie depictions usually miss the fact that hackers are a group of criminals that work together so they can hold things like data ransom… and many times they are able to collect their monkey. So, how do we catch them? Usually, following the money is the best way to catch these nerdy nuisances, so of course, with the advent of cryptocurrency, you can bet these criminals want ransoms paid in the ‘untraceable’ bitcoin. Seems like that’s the end of the story right? Pay the hackers in crypto, and you can never find out where they are because it is completely untraceable! Or… is it untraceable? We have quite a wild story for you today, because the FBI was indeed able to retrieve a $2.3 million dollar payout in bitcoin that Colonial Pipeline had paid to ransomware hackers-- and they solved the case. But… it’s not quite that simple. Seems that the hackers made one fatal error, and THAT is what got them caught. We’ve got the full story right here, so don’t you dare close that laptop, because maybe you’ll want to know just what the hackers did wrong… so YOU don’t make the same mistake! Uh, just don’t use this information for evil, ok?
