Christian Democratic Union (CDU) leader Armin Laschet gives a press conference in Berlin, on Monday, April 12.

The presser comes a day after both Laschet and head of Bavaria's Christian Social Union (CSU) Markus Soder stressed that they were ready to be the governing conservative bloc's chancellor candidate for September's general elections, as long as they are backed by the majority of the party.

Laschet, who became the CDU leader in January and currently governs Germany's most populous state, North Rhine-Westphalia, has seen his party plummet in the polls recently amid mask procurement scandals involving parliamentarians from both the CDU and CSU, as well as a sluggish COVID-19 vaccine roll-out.
