The European Parliament is holding a meeting on COVID-19 variants and the vaccines' efficacy on Monday, March 15.

The meeting is set to begin with opening remarks by the European Medicines Agency’s Marco Cavaleri, Bruno Cianco from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and the director of WHO’s Department of Immunization, Vaccines and Biologicals Katherine O’Brien. The meeting will later proceed to the MEPs exchanging views on the issue.

The event is happening after it was announced earlier on the day that the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) that is acting as a promoter of Moscow’s Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine abroad, has reached agreements with companies from Italy, Spain, France, and Germany to start joint production of the Russian jab.

On March 4, the EMA said it has started a rolling review of Sputnik V vaccine to test compliance with its safety and quality standards, the first step in gaining possible approval for use in the EU.
