On Saturday the 15th August 2020, 75 years to the day since Imperial Japan surrendered in World War 2, bringing an end to the war, a small group gathered in Mirfield to remember those who fought and gave their lives in service.
Due to Covid-19, the ceremony also recognised VE Day, as that ceremony was unable to take place at the time.
With respect to social distancing, veterans, family members, as well as members of the parish council and the public, gathered in ceremony to honour the fallen, placing wreaths at the memorial and paying their respects.
KLTV attended to both pay respects, and to document the ceremony for those who were unable to attend. We spoke to several people on the day about the importance of both VE and VJ Day, and what remembrance means to them.
