A car crashed into a security barrier before the driver lunged towards the officers with a knife, police said.
The officers opened fire and the suspect was shot dead.
Authorities said the attack, which came three months after January's deadly Capital riots, did not appear to be terrorism-related.
"Whether the attack was at law enforcement, or whoever, we have a responsibility to get to the bottom of it and we'll do that," Robert Contee, the acting chief of Washington DC's Metropolitan Police Department, said at a news conference.
Acting Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman said it was "with a very, very heavy heart that I announce one of our officers has succumbed to his injuries".
The Federal Minister for Planning Asad Umar and British MP of Pak descent, Naz Shah have sharply criticized the British government for slapping Bizzare travel restrictions on the country under the garb of a surge in the Covid-19 cases.
Under the “red list, the only UK, Irish nationals and those with residency rights in the UK can travel to Britain if they were in Pakistan ten days before their arrival to the UK and they would be required to pay for a mandatory ten-day quarantined hotel stay.
Umar questioned if the ban on Pakistan has any scientific basis or has been done on the basis of foreign policy bias. Umar in a tweet said “Every country has a right to make decisions to safeguard the health of their citizens. However, the recent decision by the UK govt to add some countries including Pakistan on the red list raises a legitimate question of whether the choice of countries is based on science or foreign policy.”
Similarly, Pakistan descent British MP, Naz Shah said “ as of today, the South African variant isn’t a concern in Pakistan whereas this isn’t the case for example in France and other countries. This begs the question why hasn’t the government extended the red list to France, Germany, and India?” She termed the decision as discriminatory to Pakistan and its diaspora in the UK.
“Further, it was knowingly and consciously discriminating against Pakistan and the Pakistani diaspora community,” added the British MP. She tweeted, Why aren’t countries which have significantly more cases, including the South African variant, not on the red list too? Why #Pakistan and not France which has 10 times more cases. I’ve been raising this for weeks and still no answers from@MattHancock or @DominicRaab.
Supporting the argument, MP Shah cited infection figures prevalent in several regional and European countries and compared those with few of Pakistan, to question the British government decision. “According to recently available data for the last seven days France, Germany, and India have a substantially higher number of infections per 100,000.”The figures quoted by Shah are Pakistan: 13, UK: 54, Bangladeshi: 15, Germany: 137, Kenya: 17, India: 24, and France: 403.” The government isn’t serious about protecting the British public as it's applying decisions led by politics, not data.”
JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia’s critical COVID-19 cases have risen in the past few weeks, prompting calls from relevant authorities for the public to adhere to measures designed to limit the spread of the virus.
At a press conference on Sunday, Interior Ministry spokesman Lt. Col. Talal Al-Shalhoub said the “unfortunate rise in daily cases” is due to “individuals who have been lax in following precautionary measures.” He added: “Each violation adds to the frightening rise in numbers.”
Al-Shalhoub warned that field inspectors in coordination with relevant authorities will remain vigilant, and will issue fines and closures when necessary.
He issued a reminder that infected individuals could be fined up to SR200,000 ($53,000), jailed for up to two years, or both if they violate quarantine measures.
Those spreading misinformation about COVID-19 on social media faces fines from SR100,000 to SR1 million, jail time of no less than a year, and no more than five, or both.
Last week, 27,083 violations were reported, 32 percent of them in the Riyadh region.
