Q&A with documentary filmmaker diane estelle Vicari on the subject of her film in progress, Shadowman: The Sammy Nestico Story.

Sammy Nestico is acclaimed as one of the greatest contributors to the last century’s field of music, working in classical, jazz, and big band as a composer, orchestrator, writer, arranger, and educator. Nestico’s career spans more than 70 years, and he continues to work at age 96. Vicari screened the extended trailer for her film, then entertain questions from viewers.

MassMu’s 2020 NEA Big Read has generated more than 40 corresponding events In collaboration with its programming partners—Massillon Public Library, Stark Parks, Walsh University, Community Hospice, Stark County District Library, Soroptimist International of Canton/Stark County, United Way of Greater Stark County, Strauss Furniture, OSU-ATI Wooster, and Canton Palace Theatre. NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.

In addition to the NEA grant, funding is provided by Massillon/North Canton Elks #2029 and Rotary Club of Massillon. Greif Paper Mill on Warmington Road in Massillon is sponsoring the Cut Up/Cut Out exhibition and Danbury Senior Living in Massillon is helping to underwrite the keynote address. The Massillon Museum receives operating support from the Ohio Arts Council and ArtsinStark to augment its primary local funding and marketing support from Visit Canton, in addition to COVID-19 relief funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The NEA Big Read is a community reading program focused on a single book. Massillon Museum and its amazing community partners create innovative and critical programs highlighting the book themes, exposing participants to new genres and ideas. The selected book is offered to the community for free so that many can participate. Since 2008, Massillon Museum has proudly distributed more than 26,000 books to Massillon and its surrounding communities.
