Social protection administration in the time of COVID-19: key lessons and best practices

The crisis has highlighted that the ‘machinery’ (people, technology, infrastructure) of social security is a critical tool for governments. As such, it requires ongoing maintenance and investment in order to be able to adapt to new risks. COVID-19 has shown that social security institutions are an essential component of a broader eco-system that must be available around the clock to support governments in delivering relief to people in times of crisis. This has made many new inter-dependencies, and new risks, emerge as part of this complex eco-system. As we now look ahead, we must focus on areas that will require further attention to enhance the ability of social security to strengthen its response further ahead of the next crisis.
