Tesla is one of the safest car brands out there, but when it switched from a radar and visual based sensor system to a 100% visual based system, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety removed the Model 3's Top Pick Plus award due to a lack of testing. Consumer reports, which uses IIHS ratings as part of its in-house rating system, followed suit.

But after a Tesla Vision equipped Model 3 passed IIHS tests with flying colors, those accolades are back.
