The United States has reported the most coronavirus deaths in a day, reporting 1,736 new fatalities, taking the national death toll to 12,700.

New York is the country’s worst affected state with the number of deaths and infections greater than both Iran and Germany after the state experienced a record 731 new deaths.

Officials have considered temporarily burying virus victims on an island as the US prepares for the predicted apex of the outbreak in coming weeks.
