Welcome to our very first 'virtual' lunchtime concert!
Over the next couple of months we will stream a concert every month on a Saturday afternoon for you to enjoy from the comfort of your own home.

This concert features regulars Elissa Goodrich (vibraphone, compositions) & Gideon Brazil (flute, saxophones) performing music at the juncture between contemporary classical and improvisation, including a selection of works from Henry Biber’s passacaglia, Erik Satie’s Gymnopedies and Elissa’s Gene Tree Project. The Gene Tree Project is inspired by climate science and the themes of resilience, adaptation and extinction.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Elissa Goodrich (vibraphone)
Musician, sound-artist and composer Elissa Goodrich’s sound-art works play internationally in festivals and cultural institutions across Europe and Australasia. A 2x nominee for Australian Jazz Work of the Year with colleague Clare Shannon, and leader, composer of world-jazz States of Play, Elissa’s Forgotten Songs of Flight, in duo with cellist Caerwen Martin performed at National Opera Center (New York) (2017), and she co-created Fragments with Susan Bamford Caleo (performer) and Margaret Mills (director), (La Mama Theatre) (2017). Elissa’s soundart work What the Rains Bring was part of International Sonorities Contemporary Music Festival (Belfast) (2018). This year, Elissa’s audio-visual Common Time with Carmody feature in New Media Festival, Museum of Networked Art (Germany/Online), her Beneath-Above features in International Sonorities Festival of Contemporary Music (Ire), her Gene Tree performs @ International Symposium of Improvised Music (Aus) (postponed). Alongside her Between Footsteps (Heide Museum of Modern Art) (Aus) (2016- current), Elissa is composer-recipient of 2018 APRA AMCOS Art Music Fund for Gene Tree Project: Listen. Now. Again (2018-2022)., and, Elissa’s Gene Tree Project continues in partnership with Artistic Director, Co-CEO, Nadja Kostich and St Martin’s Youth Performing Arts Centre. Elissa’s new music/science collaboration The Waves Project, (supported by Australia Council for the Arts), by invitation of Lead Scientist Prof. Richard Manasseh of ‘The Sounds of Surf’, commences later this year.

Gideon Brazil (flute, saxophones)

Gideon Brazil has a Bachelor of Music from Melbourne University and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Music Performance at the Victorian College of the Arts (jazz studies). As a performer, Gideon has recorded and performed with artists including: {Popular} Gotye, The Basics, Paul Kelly, Eddie Perfect, The Beautiful Girls, Isaiah Firebrace, Darren Sylvester, Paul Mac, Sgt Slick & Broadway Sounds; {Jazz} Vince Jones, Luke Howard, Stephen Magnusson, Brenton Foster, Marc Hannaford, Kimba Griffith, cleverhorse & Antelodic; {Contemporary/Classical} Orchestra Victoria, Victorian Opera, Australian Pops Orchestra, Kate Neal, James Hullick’s Bolt Ensemble, Elissa Goodrich’s Gene Tree Project. Gideon has toured extensively throughout Australia and internationally (Indonesia, UK and Europe), and has performed at festivals including Glastonbury (UK), The Great Escape (UK), Wangaratta Jazz Festival & The Melbourne International Jazz Festival. As an Arts Administrator, Gideon has been curating and managing festivals and events for 20 years, as Festival Co-ordinator (2001), then Festival Manager of the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, as co-founder and Artistic Director of the Half Bent Winter Music Festival in August 2002, developing into a thriving creative arts organisation, with subsequent Half Bent Music Festivals in 2003, 2004 & 2005, as well as performances featured during the year at venues throughout Melbourne.
