We start with today's announcement that the South Korean government has approved AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine for use on people aged 65 and older.
The country's Prime Minister said that millions more AstraZeneca doses will be arriving in South Korea in the second quarter.
For which, a schedule is to be announced next week.
Jang Tae-hyun reports.
The AstraZeneca vaccine can now be given to people in South Korea who are 65 and over.
Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun said on Thursday that the decision was reached during a meeting of experts the previous day.
This means that over 370-thousand people in that age group at nursing facilities and hospitals will start to receive their first shots this month.
He also revealed that more AstraZeneca vaccines are scheduled to arrive in South Korea in the coming weeks.
"We'll be getting seven million doses by the last week of May to June. We'll also administer those shots to people 65 and above."
As people need two-shots, that amount will be enough for three-point-five million people.
The vaccine's safety and efficacy had already been verified about a month ago, but at the time, there wasn't enough clinical data for senior residents.
That meant those aged 65 and above were excluded from receiving the vaccine after the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety said such a move should be considered carefully.
However, a recent study out of the UK has shown the AstraZeneca vaccine is effective for older people and various European countries like Germany and Italy have approved it for older age groups.
As per advice from World Health Organization... that the AstraZeneca vaccine is more effective when there's a wider gap between the first and second shots... the second dose will be given after 10 weeks, not eight.
The Prime Minister also said that if a vaccine receiver shows symptoms of anaphylaxis, the second-shot will not be given.
In addition to that, flight attendants have been added to the second quarter vaccination group... as they were vulnerable to the more transmissible variants and exempt from self-quarantine.
Around 20-thousand will get the vaccines.
A schedule for the second quarter is due to be announced next week.
