Demonstrators gather in Berlin on Saturday, September 11, to protest against income inequality and an alleged shortage of affordable housing in Germany.

The protest organisers are demanding a nationwide 'Mietendeckel,' or rental cap. They have been campaigning for a referendum to expropriate the city's largest private landlords, taking place in Berlin on September 26, the same day as the federal election.

In April, Germany's highest court ruled that Berlin's rental cap was unconstitutional. The rent cap came into force in February 2020, freezing rents for the majority of Berlin's flats at their June 2019 level for five years. It was a flagship policy of the city's governing coalition of the centre-left Social Democrats, the Greens, and the far-left Die Linke parties.


Am Samstag, den 11. September, versammeln sich Demonstranten in Berlin, um gegen Einkommensungleichheit und einen angeblichen Mangel an bezahlbarem Wohnraum in Deutschland zu protestieren.

Die Organisatoren des Protests fordern einen bundesweiten "Mietendeckel". Sie haben für ein Volksbegehren zur Enteignung der größten privaten Vermieter der Stadt geworben, das am 26. September, dem Tag der Bundestagswahl, in Berlin stattfinden soll.

Im April entschied das höchste deutsche Gericht, dass die Berliner Mietobergrenze verfassungswidrig ist. Die Kappungsgrenze trat im Februar 2020 in Kraft und fror die Mieten für die meisten Berliner Wohnungen für fünf Jahre auf dem Stand von Juni 2019 ein. Die Kappungsgrenze war eine der wichtigsten Maßnahmen der Regierungskoalition aus Mitte-Links-Sozialdemokraten, Grünen und der Linkspartei.
