Thousands of people gather for the annual 'Revolutionary May Day' demonstration in Berlin.

The left-wing, anti-capitalist rally commemorates the 1987 riots in Kreuzberg, when police officers broke up a largely peaceful street festival with tear gas and batons.

The subsequent Kiezaufstand ('neighbourhood uprising') and serious unrest which followed resulted in the police withdrawing completely from the area for several hours.

The event marked the start of the annual May Day protests.
