(3 Jul 2020) BERLIN NIGHTCLUBS FIGHTING FOR SURVIVAL AMID VIRUS
The times of hammering beats, pumping basslines and permissive club nights until early morning are over – clubbing no longer exists in Berlin, one of the global hotspots of vibrant nightlife.
The doors of Berlin's clubs closed in mid-March to stop the spread of the coronavirus, among them legendary venues like Berghain and Tresor, and they are remaining closed.
Club owners are fighting for survival as closures due to the coronavirus pandemic persist, facing an uncertain future.
Some are now hoping to be able to hold outdoor events, certain venues are opening beer gardens during the summer.
"We are trying a lot to improve the situation, we have opened the beer garden now less than a month ago, we have of course also taken up short-time allowances, we are also trying to receive subsidies", said Tom "Tomtom" Neumann, events manager at Wilde Renate nightclub.
"But of course that doesn't compensate for what isn't happening in terms of club business at the weekend," he added.
Neumann stressed the cultural and economic importance of the hundreds of clubs, and their contribution to the image of the Berlin as a city where people can meet, express themselves and feel free.
Pamela Schobess, chair of the Club Commission Berlin, said clubs cannot generate any income while still having to continue to pay upkeep costs.
The Gretchen in Berlin's Kreuzberg district, of which Schobess is co-owner, would not only host parties, but also live concerts and cultural events.
"As soon as we cannot have any more events, no money comes in, but we are sitting on the costs, because we have venues we need to keep. We have to pay rent, insurance, all kinds of things, and we have no way to earn money right now", she said.
Schobess said clubs in the German capital are really waiting for the government's 130 billion euro (approx. 146 billion US dollars) national stimulus package to take effect.
"We hope for this help, and only because we hope for it and because it was promised we still exist", she said.
