Dozens of protesters joined a Querdenken ('lateral thinkers') march against the coronavirus lockdown in Berlin on Saturday.

Police were seen accompanying the demonstration which proceeded without incident.

The German government has implemented an array of restrictions, including a curfew based on COVID-19 infection rates, and has repeatedly justified the measures as necessary to curb the spread of the virus and to ensure that the healthcare system does not become overwhelmed.

The number of new cases in Germany has been falling in recent weeks after the curfew was implemented and as the country's vaccination programme picks up speed, with 36.5 percent of the population already having received at least one dose, and 10.9 percent fully vaccinated according to health ministry figures on Friday.

Since the start of the pandemic, the country has seen over 3.5 million confirmed cases of coronavirus and over 86,000 COVID-related deaths according to Robert Koch Institute data.
